Breaking: pen mightier than the House, Obama prohibits LGBT discrimination

Finally, after Congress dragging its feet on passing basic human rights legislation, President Obama has had it. The White House announced that he will sign an Executive Order that will forbid federal contractors from discriminating against employees on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. This is groundbreaking work, since House Republicans have repeatedly obstructed efforts to advance rights for anyone that doesn’t fit their heterosexual, patriarchal, white world view.

This Executive Order improves working conditions around the nation for thousands of government employees and their families who still have to fear for their jobs just because they happen to be LGBT. This is a small action with large impact by the President who is sending a message to Congress that fair workplace environments are good for everyone. It also sends the message that bigotry and hatred will not be tolerated in the federal government. Bravo, Mr. President, bravo.
