And now, news from the Water is Wet department: Not teaching sex-ed is a surefire way to increase chlamydia infection rates in your school district.
According to NewsWest 9, the outbreak occurred in the Crane Independent School District in Texas (of course it did) where letters are reportedly being sent out through the State Health Department of Texas informing parents of the rise in chlamydia infections.
But wait, there’s more! Raw Story reports that, according to the Crane Independent School District handbook, the district “does not offer a curriculum in human sexuality.”
I would also like to remind everyone that Texas is the state that voted to pass an amendment to move $3 million out of HIV prevention into abstinence-only sex education last month.
The Lone Star state also ranks as the third-highest state in the nation in terms of HIV infection rates.
It’s almost like the data is trying to tell us that simply telling teens “don’t touch each other’s no-no area” isn’t working.

Look, these are the facts: Texas is suffering from an increase in STDs across the board because conservative Christian legislators think it’s a sin to bump uglies outside of marriage.
Seriously, the guy who proposed the amendment to move $3 million out of fighting HIV in Texas is quoted in the Texas Tribune as saying, “My goal is for everyone to be abstinent until they are married.”
Texas may have an outbreak of chlamydia to deal with because of their ridiculous conservative policies, but far more dangerous is the contagion of ignorance that has infected their government.
