Rep. Steve King (R-IA) is well known for making inflammatory remarks, like this one about DREAMers: “For everyone who’s a valedictorian, there’s another 100 out there that weigh 130 pounds and they’ve got calves the size of cantaloupes because they’re hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert.”

After hours of speeches by Democratic House members about the urgent need to address gun violence, and tearful remembrances for people whose lives were taken, that was the best Steve King could come up with.

How to explain King to normal people? He’s the man whom fellow Iowa Congressman Dave Loebsack, a famously genial guy, called “an embarrassment to Iowa.

And he’s the guy who recently proposed an amendment to keep the Treasury department from putting Harriet Tubman’s image on the $20 bill. He called the proposed changes “racist” and “sexist.”

Like some other really enthusiastic Second Amendment lovers in Congress, he went to college during the Vietnam war but never actually served in the military — he got three draft deferments.

Compared to true leaders like Rep. John Lewis and Rep. Elijah Cummings — who are working to protect the millions of us who don’t believe killers should have easy access to weapons of war — King is an utter embarrassment.
