Eleven-year-old Karla Ortiz met Hillary at a campaign event and broke into tears as she told Hillary about her worries that her parents would be deported. Hillary called Karla to her side and promised her that she would do everything she could to make sure that doesn’t happen. “Let me do all the worrying,” she told Karla. “I’ll do all the worrying. Is that a deal?” Big squeezy hugs ensued.
Tonight, Karla Ortiz appeared with her mom, Francisca Ortiz, at the Democratic convention, where Karla spoke about being the daughter of undocumented immigrants who came to the US in search of the American Dream; about her fears that her parents will be deported; about how Hillary wants her “to have the worries of an 11-year-old, not the weight of the world on my shoulders.”
This is why we’re Democrats. Because we carry each other’s burdens. Because we care about one another. Because we try to do all the good we can, in all the ways we can.
