Everytown for Gun Safety, the group Mike Bloomberg funded to counteract the influence of the NRA, is going after six key senators who have resisted even minimal gun regulation.

Everytown for Gun Safety, the group backed by billionaire ex-mayor Mike Bloomberg (who has endorsed Hillary and is speaking at the DNC this week), is ramping up their efforts to put the heat on Republicans blocking progress on gun control.

It’s no coincidence that a strong gun control advocate like Hillary selected Tim Kaine for her running mate — he has a long history of taking on the NRA in his state of Virginia, and Everytown’s efforts will certainly amplify the top of the Democratic ticket.

We can expect pointed attacks on Sen. Kelly Ayotte, Sen. Ron Johnson, and Sen. Marco Rubio, who are up for reelection, and on Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, Sen. Jeff Flake, and Sen. Dean Heller, who aren’t.

Think Progress reports that the group has already started spending against Ayotte, who’s one of the most vulnerable senators this fall.

Ulmer told Think Progress these are senators who have either blocked efforts to close gun loopholes, or claimed a misleading record on background checks.

The group recently ran a full page ad in the state’s Union Leader attacking Ayotte.

Expect to see more of the same kind of hard-hitting ads against Ron Johnson and Marco Rubio soon. Shannon Watts, who founded this campaign, says since the group has far fewer resources than the NRA, they will focus their spending strategically, in races where they may make a real difference.
